Similarly, in recent years, the Dragon Boat Festival has moved beyond China to become an international holiday celebrated by people who may know little about the holiday’s origins.

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of three major Chinese holidays, along with the Spring and Moon Festivals. Of the three, it is possibly the oldest, dating back to the Warring States Period in 227 B.C. The festival commemorates Qu Yuan, a minister in the service of the Chu Emperor. Despairing over corruption at court, Qu threw himself into a river. Townspeople jumped into their boats and tried in vain to save him. Then, hoping to distract hungry fish from his body, the people scattered rice on the water.

鄉下的灶台是兩邊的，一邊用來燒水，一邊用來煮菜煮飯，外婆就把早已洗乾淨的鴨蛋放入大鍋裏，用木瓢從另一個熱水鍋裏舀幾瓢水放入大鍋中，然後還細心地放入一小勺的鹽，接着就往灶裏添了幾根枯枝，便坐在了我旁邊，開始給我編絡子了。
外婆的手由於長期勞動已經粗糙的像樹皮一般了，但卻不失靈巧，三下五除二一個用紅繩編成的絡子就編成了。
此時，蛋也煮好了，外婆就撈起一個的用紅紙沾水染成了紅色，再用乾布擦拭乾淨，裝進絡子裏，掛在我脖子上。接着，外婆就往我兜裏裝着瓜子、糖果、花生，我往往十分高興，因為這樣，我就可以和小夥伴們一起去看龍舟賽了。
外婆總是把我送到大門口，囑咐着要我快些回來吃粽子。我總是一溜煙就消失了。
小夥伴們此時都差不多到齊了，由鄰家的大姐姐當頭，領着我們這一羣小毛孩到河邊看賽龍舟。由於河道較小，所以就只有兩條的龍舟，每條龍舟都有13個人，12個人划槳，1個人打鼓喊口號，“一、二、嘿呦，一、二、快快、”12個皮膚黝黑的小夥子動作整齊地划着，兩條龍舟你追我趕地向前駛去。
可是，小孩子會知道看什麼呢？我們只不過圖個熱鬧罷了。女孩子一般看了一會兒，便覺得無趣了，就坐在一旁分享起零嘴，男孩子呢，則不然，他們總喜歡沿着岸邊追着龍舟跑，由於划槳的人力度較大，幾乎每個男孩身上都有水花濺着的痕跡。
鑼響了，大概是舟到終點了吧，剛好東西也吃完了，站起身，與夥伴們拉着手高高興興回家去。
太陽也慢慢爬到正空中，外婆家的廚房裏已經飄出了桂葉的清香了，我就連忙躥進廚房裏，去挑已出鍋的個大的粽子。一般我都會坐在門檻上把那個粽子吃得乾乾淨淨，偶爾會剩下幾顆糯米粒給雞吃，看着大公雞的貪吃樣，我也被逗樂了……
儘管如今過端午節，母親每年都會包粽子，編絡子給我，儘管母親的手藝一點也不比外婆遜色，但我總覺得少了些什麼。
我真懷念兒時的端午節啊！
