9月27日是“世界旅遊日(world tourism day)”。世界旅遊日是由世界旅遊組織確定的旅遊工作者和旅遊者的節日。1970年9月27日，國際官方旅遊聯盟在墨西哥城舉行的特別代表大會上通過了世界旅遊組織章程。為紀念這個日子，1979年9月世界旅遊組織第三次代表大會正式把9月27日定為世界旅遊日。
為普及旅遊理念，闡明旅遊的作用和意義，促進世界旅遊業的發展，世界旅遊組織從1980年起每年都為世界旅遊日確定一個主題，各國旅遊組織根據每年主題和要求開展活動。中國於1983年正式成為世界旅遊組織成員。
