I have always enjoyed studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and I wouldlike the opportunity to continue this study. Chemical Engineering appeals to mebecause of the challenges involved in the application of scientific theory topractical, real world problems such as how to deal with nuclear waste. Iparticularly look forward to studying fluid dynamics as I was introduced to thisduring the Engineering Education Scheme (EES). I am aware that in today’s worldchemical engineering has an increasingly important role across a wide range ofindustries from pharmaceuticals to petrochemicals. The broad range of careerpaths, and the opportunity to contribute to society through technologicalinnovation, is for me, one of the main attractions of chemical engineering.

I have applied to take part in the Year In Industry scheme during which Ihope to gain practical experience, as well as greater maturity enabling me to gointo my degree course with improved skills and broader experience. I also hopeto study e-learning courses on project management and presentation skills run bythe IChemE. In Year 12 I took part in the EES, which improved my understandingand skills in team working, time management, and report writing, as well asvisual and oral presentation. Throughout the course of the project the team hadto frequently correspond with mentors in industry and academia and thisexperience has broadened my appreciation of practice and application in a reallife situation. In July I attended a week-long ‘Into Engineering’ seminar run byREACT Engineering. Working in two teams, we were given a design exercise basedupon a ty///picmissioning project. I also attended a Headstart courseat Newcastle University, which I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the main activitieswas to design, manufacture and test a small crane. I found both of theseexperiences very challenging, as we were given only limited time so we had toprioritise our tasks and carefully plan our work.

This year a fellow student and I were awarded £500 by the EuropeanScholarship Prize to fund a visit to Prague to do research for our A-levelHistory coursework. I gained an understanding of the city’s culture and historyand further developed my independence. During the summer I represented my schoolon a Connexions review of a government white paper on 14-19 education. I gainedan insight into the government’s proposals and learned a lot about working withdifferent groups of people. Last year I was part of the editorial team for theschool magazine. I wrote a number of articles and I was responsible for ensuringthat staff contributions were ready for the deadline. I also enjoy participatingin a range of sports and have represented the school at football and cricket,which has further enhanced my team working skills.

In my spare time I am working towards my Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award. InSeptember I completed a 4-day expedition in the Lake District, which tested myendurance but gave me a great sense of achievement. As part of the award I havebeen helping at the local youth café once a week, which I am really enjoying asit gives me the chance to meet new people. I also enjoy reading, particularlybooks on physics and Russian history. I am really interested in computers and Iam currently trying to configure a Linux based file and print server for my homenetwork.

Motivation

Ich hei?e Zhang Chen, komme aus der Stadt Beijing, VR China. Nach der Hochschulaufnahmepruefung habe ich bei der Studiengangwahl das Fach von Computer Wissenschaft und Technologie gew?hlt. Für meine Entscheidung zum Studium in Deutschland habe ich folgende Gründe,

Erstens, nach Deutschland zu studieren ist immer mein Traum. Deutschland ist eine entwickeltes Land, ihre Industrie, Wirtschaft liegt in den Spitze in der Welt. In diesem Land zu lernen und leben kann ich mehre Wissenschaften bekommen.

Zweitens, eine Schwester hatte ihres Studium in Deutschland abgeschlossen. Sie erklaert mir oft ihre Leben in Deutschland. Damals verfuellt Neid in meinem Herz. Die kulturelle Atmosph?re in Deutschland ist sehr stark. Die Literatur, Musik, das Drama usw. stehen in der Tradition von den anderen europ?ischen L?ndern, begründen trotzdem eine neue Richtung. So moechte ich diesem Land selbst verspueren.

Drittens, meine Eltern unterstützen mich bei meiner Entscheidung für das Studium in Deutschland. Nach der Meinung meines Vaters ist es der Traum der Ingenieur, die chinesische Industrie weiter entwickelt zu werden und Abstand mit Deutschland oder anderen entwickelten L?ndern abgekürzt zu werden, um den Traum zu wirklichen, will ich angestrengt studieren und mehre Wissens zu erhalten.

Schlie?lich bin ich auch tief von meinen Lehrern beeinflusst. Sie sch?tzen Ihre Studienerlebnisse in Deutschland hoch. Ich bin sicher, dass durch das Studium in Deutschland meine professionalen Qualifikationen verbessert werden und mein Horizont erweitert wird.

Ich bin optimistisch, aktiv, freundlich, selbstdisziplin?r, sprachgewandt, kommunikationsf?hig, willensstark, flexibel, gut in Zeiteinteilung und Zusammenfassung. 我每天上學都要經過西電,校園裏樹木很多,我經常能聞到綠樹青草的香味,而一旁古樸的教學樓更讓這個校園顯得優雅,久而久之我也就對這所佇立在鬧事之中卻能保持它原有氣息的高校產生了濃厚的興趣。後來,我開始查看有關電子科技大學的資料。

我漸漸瞭解了關於這所高校的歷史沿革、辦學理念和學科設置等一系列情況。我知道了電子科技大學是以信息與電子學科為主,工、理、管、文多學科協調發展的全國重點大學,是國家“211工程”立項建設的重點高校之一。而且學校匯聚了一支政治素質優良、學術水平高、結構合理的教師隊伍。最讓我感到興奮的是“神五”、“神六”飛船副總設計師楊宏等一大批IT行業領軍人物和技術骨幹原來都是電子科技大學培養出來的。

看到這些,我情不自禁地笑了起來,與其説是為陝西有如此好的高校而高興,還不如説是為自己找到了目標而高興。特別是西電的通信工程專業吸引了我,對宇宙飛船和神祕的外太空充滿好奇的我,希望自己也能像楊宏老師那樣為航天事業做出貢獻。

的確,從那時起我就決定不管結果怎樣,都要以電子科技大學為目標奮鬥。

我深知確定了目標就要為之而努力,否則一切都是徒勞的,但我有時也會對大學的生活充滿想象:我想象着與大學裏的同學一起生活的那種快樂;想象着與教授們一起探討問題時的那種學習氛圍;想象着豐富多彩的社會實踐活動……而現在,為了我的目標和我所幻想的一切美好我必須更加刻苦地學習。

I am interested in the field of study of Organizational Behavior. In thepast, I have had the experience of working in settings where the people and thecorporate cultures of the companies were all different. I have found that thereis a great difference in the both the behaviors of people and of theirorganizations, depending on whether they are state-owned enterprises (SOEs),large multinational firms, or small to medium sized foreign enterprises. Onesimple example is that of the ability of an employee to act independentlywithout direct instructions from his or her boss. In many Chinese organizations,acting without direct instructions is considered a form of disrespect towardsthe supervisor, who is generally offended by such behavior. In my experience andresearch, such organizations tend to have low operating efficiency with theemployees losing their innate ability to take the initiative.

In contrast, foreign enterprises tend to welcome employees who have theability to make decisions on their own, though the extent to which this is truedepends on whether the supervisor is a local Chinese or an expatriate.  

The purpose behind this personal statement is to not only gain admission toyour well-established and highly respected Ph.D. program, but to impress uponyou my passion for learning and my tremendous desire to succeed in bothscholastic research and in teaching on the professional level. I have based mydecision to pursue an academic career not on purely practical reasons, butrather on my own natural interests and aptitude. My personal philosophy is thatmoney and social status should not be pursued as life-consuming objectives andthat in actuality they are the by-products of goals originating from one's innerneeds. I seek enrolment ina program that not only maintains a superb reputation but that will also demandonly the highest quality effort from each of its students. I hope that you areable to give me the privilege of continuing my studies on the level demanded byyour prestigious institution. I have applied all my abilities and diligence togetting into Oxford.  My aim has always been to excel in examinations, no matterhow demanding they were. I made sure I achieved straight. As in all aspects ofmy my strong performance in my A level history exam to my past workexperience, my background and qualifications have given me the skills to succeedin your ough school occupies most of my time, I have learnt therewards of contributing towards school life and have been head student for twoyears. I take pleasure in debating issues that are important to me, and as partof my contribution I set up a school debating society. All of my experiences, coupled with a strong academicbackground, will allow me to embrace studying history at OxfordUniversity.  When I looked up leadership in the dictionary, it said that it wasthe capacity to lead and the act or instance of leading. These are two verybroad defnitions of leadership. Many people have different notions of what thisword actually means. When I was challenged to use different items to describewhat leadership actually is, I thought this was going to be a hard and obnoxioustask. What could I learn from comparing leadership to a stuffed animal or arubber chicken? But when I sat down to come up with a couple of answers, Irealized that leadership could be compared to almost anything a personwants.

All I know about leadership I learned from a calculator. A calculator canadd everything together to come up with the best answer. It can delet e what isunnecessary and only include what is important. It can solve any type ofproblem. These are all important equalities a leader has to have. A leader hasto be able to add all of the ideas together to make the best possible ers have to know how to decipher the good and the bad out of an idea. Theyhave to be versatile and know how to deal with different types of issues.

All I know about leadership I learned from a ball. A ball is able to bounceback up after it is dropped. It is round and has no creases. A ball can bethrown back and forth to different people. All of these qualities are alsoleadership qualities. A leader has to be ready for every situation that isthrown at him or her. He or she has to be able to bounce back from any setbacksand never dwell on the past. Leaders have to exhibit many qualities and never beclosed-minded about a situation. A leader must be able to delegate when he orshe cannot get the work done. They have to trust everyone they lead to be ableto "catch the ball" and keep a project rolling.

This activity made me realize that being a leader is so much more than justhaving authority and having the ability to take control of a situation. A leaderhas to be trusting of all the people he or she leads and, leaders must be ableto combine ideas into one encompassing idea. They cannot sit in the backgroundand watch events happen; they have to jump in and be involved. They should notdelegate all their responsibilities away.

Leadership is more than what the dictionary says it is.

I learned through all of this that I have many of these qualities.

I have the ability to solve problems, lead through adversity, and beversatile. From answering this question, I realized that I could leadeffectively, even if my leadership style is different from other I joined student council in my frst year of high school, I did not havethese qualities because I was never put into a situation where I had to lead. Iwas too reserved to try. When I tried, I learned that I could succeed in this. Idid not realize until I answered this question about leadership. I was neverable to see that being a leader is not just about taking control of a group andtelling everyone what to When I was a freshman, I thoughtleadership was this. I did not know that did not have to be forceful and strict.I stereotyped a leader then. Thisis where I went wrong. A leader is about beingyourself and never letting anyone change you. I thought I had to change to be agood leaderOnly when I expanded my comfort zone did I realize this was nottrueIt only took three years and a silly question/game to fgure this out.

學習上我一直能在班級排前十,成績在全校屬中上等。然而大學聯考面前這卻不是個理想的成績。我的理科成績較優秀——有時能達到全班第一,而文科卻總是達不到自己的理想狀態。我喜歡研究問題、難題,喜歡安靜的琢磨事情,被老師評價為“想的和別人不一樣的學生”。我不敢説自己是否優秀,但我自己是很享受這種與眾不同的感覺的。

在課外,我興趣廣泛,在自主研究上還得到過比較令我自豪的成績。我曾花一年的課餘時間來製作一個遊戲,該作品因其精巧而有創意曾受好評,只是因為缺少劇情而人氣較低。在一年期間製作進程斷斷續續,程序構思使我絞盡腦汁,在玩遊戲與做工程之間不斷進行心理鬥爭。收集素材、算法、音頻剪輯……每一步都十分用心。很多個第一次讓我得到了不少經驗。然後在終於完成的時候,那種喜悦也是不可替代的。我學會了一樣很重要的事情,那就是堅持。

另一件讓我獲益匪淺的業餘嘗試是曲譜。因為很喜歡一段電視配樂,我嘗試把它寫成鋼琴譜。我擁有業餘電子琴五級證書,但這依然不容易。遇到瓶頸後,我求助於網上。然而有多少人會隨便幫助陌生人做這種麻煩事呢?答案是零。於是我便下定決心,靠自己來完成。沒想到經過自己的一番努力真的把它寫成了!從中我明白了另一樣重要的事,那就是自立自強。沒人可以隨便讓你依靠。困難要自己克服才有意義。

所以有理由相信,雖然我於現在的只能做到中上成績,但到大學去學習自己喜歡的,嚮往科目時我一定能做到最好。那時我會選擇自己的事業,全身心投入去完成。相信我做到更好——也希望您可以相信。

我認為我最重要的優勢是,我有時間——同所有人一樣。我還有利用大學四年去改變自己、完成自己的機會。去爭取它,那便是我現在在做的事了。希望貴校能給我實現自我的機會。期待您的認可!

I live in Pakistan-a country destroying itself with bombs,guns and governments' blabber to find justifications for what it is going through;a country where a former president is murdered in public,where the nation's constitution and parliament are suspended at the same time,and where the voice of a common man is unheard.

Since the last few years, I had aspired to become a idea of "scalpels," "opened chests" and "sutures" had always intrigued then it happened!The recent unprecedented events in my country wiped off the dust of disillusionment from my eyes;I lost my will to become a ver,the turmoil in the country led me towards newspapers and news channels,and hence Politics.

As I involved myself into politics,I realized that it is all-embracive-wielding its way over social and economic life-it is the omnipotent of can mobilize public opinion,gear up propaganda machinery,make or repeal laws and what ed up by public opinion,supported by the majority of the legislators,armed with the means to keep the people in a state of ignorance,political power crosses the limits of dictatorial tical power,like the most powerful intoxicant,makes the persons in power to forget social ethics,political morality and obligations.

Most of the learned youth in this country consider Politics to be "a refuge for the scoundrels" and this derogatory remark may be true if we look at the deceptive and degenerated type of politicians indulging in a dirty these political parties are votaries of democracy,but the way they conduct themselves inside their own parties is nothing but senseless efore a very few students choose to pursue Politics as a profession,but what they don't realize is that if we don't take a stand the system can never be ,I want to study Politics so I can come back to my country and contribute what little I can do for my homeland and its I can inspire even a single person,it would be worth world today is growing are now not only to think of our own nation but as and when we think of it,we have to keep the international perception in mind;consequently,I chose Politics with International Relations as one of my courses.

Studying in UK will breed a sense of individuality and self reliance.I would be able to interact with people from everywhere and get to know about their would not only open new horizons for me,but would also clear some preconceived notions one has about the other.I have always been an active participant of debates.I have participated in 3 Model UN conferences out of which I was awarded with the Best Delegate award in two. I was also one of the two students to be selected from my school to participate in the English Speaking Union 'over, I've taken part in Parliamentary style debates efore I believe I can communicate effectively in public and language will not be a barrier in my hermore, I have worked as an internee at Al-Shifa Eye Hospital for a month in I learnt how to deal with patients,use the Auto Ref, handle files and also campaigned to a remote area near Murree where we helped the doctors in examining the patients free of her experience which taught me a lot was when me and my fellow colleagues volunteered to paint walls for the SOS Children's addition,I worked with SUNGI (NGO) where a group of 5 of us had to organize an event to pay tribute to 1000 Women for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I enjoy Literature,especially the works of Shakespeare,Tennessee Williams,Thomas Hardy and Andrew Marvell.I'd be delighted to study in a challenging atmosphere where I can focus on my studies.I commit to my work and my ability to think out of the box,keenness for Politics and my perception of things,I understand,gives me an edge over others.I believe in myself,and if provided with an opportunity,I'd make the university proud.

"All I know about leadership I learned from..." What items could a personuse to describe leadership qualities?

Inspired by the student council advisors at my high school.

Student council was a big part of my life in high school. I haveparticipated in it since my frst year of high school. When I frst joined, I wasquiet, na?ve, and unwilling to participate in many activities. I was scared tomeet new people and afraid to apply myself. This all began to change. Half waythrough my frst year in student council, one of the advisors can up to me andasked why I did not participate that much. I did not have an answer for her anddid not know how to respond. After this, I began to think of an answer. I becamefrustrated and decided to change. I started to show up at events and had a greattime. I realized I loved this and wanted to start leading these activities. Inmy sophomore, junior, and now my senior year of high school, I asserted myselfand took on a strong leadership role in student council. I did not fgure out theanswer to why I was so reserved until this year with the help of thisquestion.
